Márta Kucsora

Often using an abstract expressionist technique, Márta Kucsora strives to capture the dynamic energy and movement of water, and the ethereal mysteries of nature.  This crossover between abstraction and landscape painting follows the footsteps of Helen Frankenthaler, but the stunning final result is distinctly Kucsora’s.

I start to paint a picture on the basis of specific visual ideas, but I have the freedom to integrate incidents of accidental creation into the composition while I work, and I often deviate from the original plan. While I paint I subconsciously strive for the ’sweetspot’  moment when the painting becomes the scene I want to depict.

I work actively, exerting myself, if only because of the size of the paintings. It is important for me to work fast, to make the paintings dynamic. I try to imitate and to depict the motion, essence and liquid nature of water with the medium of paint. I pour it, splatter it, let the material stream, I keep it in a semi-fluid state and at the right moment I halt the motion, retaining the sensation of continuous motion.

I do not paint the waterfall or wave. Instead, I replay the story on canvass, including the thunder of the water, the crash of the waves, everything. In all this what motivates me most is seizing the moment.

I never know exactly what the final result will be; I only implement the original concept approximately. As I work, due to accidents and the result of unpredictable occurrences, ever more novel ideas arise. I discover these ideas, in truth, while engaged in the process of creation; it launches a series of neverending opportunities to experiment.  While I process these ideas, an infinite number of ways to implement them arise.
