Laura Somogyi

I graduated from the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts as a painter in 2000, but already at that time I was more interested in attitude and sensitivity than painting itself. During my studies I experimented with various types of techniques and materials, with the main objective of freeing the meaning of the weight and conotations of these. I chose to work with personal experiences and my own body as a topic, placing the questions surfaced on this micro level in the larger art historical and sociological context. I have found a way of expression that is light and sensitive enough for the work I create: three dimensional thread-drawings, thread installations. Sewing was always very important for me for personal reasons, and this technique helps me to create a link between the act of sewing and drawing. In the working process I focus on adapting the experiences from traditional drawing and exploring the freedom this new medium has to offer.
