Martin KOBE, DE

Martin Kobe was born in Dresden, Germany in 1973 and studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Germany under Prof. Arno Rink. He was awarded the ‘Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Scholarship’ in 2004/05 and exhibited at numerous international institutions and museums. His solo exhibitions include ‘The Centre Cannot Hold’ at the Dresden State Art Collections, ‘Behind True Symmetry’ at White Cube Gallery in London (both in 2007) and ‘Other Monuments’ at The Domus Artium in Salamanca in 2009.
In his acrylic paintings, Kobe constructs architectural visions which refer to ancient Roman, Greek and Asian sacred architecture as well as to 20th century modernism and contemporary green architecture concepts. Uniting features of his paintings are deep perspectives, dynamic diagonals and an intense palette. With surgical precision he examines, dissects, and dyes the image sphere – then abandons his buildings and breaks them up again by creating large passages of washed out palette and soaked contours that deride the central perspective. Single elements of the paintings threaten to break apart, the massive becomes unstable and the viewer’s focus begins to blur.
