Liz Nielsen is a New York based photographic artist who works in the analog color darkroom. Without the use of a camera, Liz builds her own negatives. Transparent shapes are cut out with a scissors and layered on top of glass. Handmade cardboard puzzles are taken apart and put together in the darkness allowing multiple exposures to emerge on the light sensitive paper. Light bleeds and is contained. Alongside of the enlarger light, she uses flashlights, bike lights, laser lights, cell phone lights, rave lights, and toy lights. Nielsen enjoys working in this way because everything is variable.  It is impossible to create the same image twice making each photogram unique.
In April 2016, Nielsen’s solo exhibition, The Medium will open at Danziger gallery in New York. In June, her photographs will be in a two-person show in Ireland at the Sirius Art Center, and in September, Liz will be doing a residency at the Budapest Art Factory in Hungary.  Last year, Nielsen had 3 solo photo exhibitions: Night Garden at SOCO gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina, Magic Lantern at Laurence Miller gallery in NYC and Wolf Moon at Denny gallery in NYC. Her recent exhibitions have been reviewed in the New Yorker, Charlotte Magazine, and Beautiful Decay. Nielsen received her MFA in Photography from the University of Illinois, Chicago and her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
